Technical Textiles: Industrial Applications & Types of Fabric

What is Technical Textile?

Technical textiles are defined as textile materials and products used primarily for their technical performance and functional properties rather than their aesthetic or decorative characteristics. This is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the Textile Industry, which is manufacturing high-tech, high-performance fabric designed not just to look attractive, but to present a significant added value in terms of functionality. The textile coating process is widely used in the manufacturing of technical textiles.

Technical textiles are textile materials and products that are engineered for specific technical and functional performance, rather than primarily aesthetic or decorative purposes. They are designed to perform specific functions, such as providing strength, durability, insulation, filtration, and protection. Examples of technical textiles include Kevlar for bulletproof vests, fiberglass for insulation, and Gore-Tex for waterproof clothing.

Functions of Technical Textile:
Technical textiles are a specialized type of textile that have specific functions and characteristics. Different functions can be achieved through technical textiles. These can be categorized into four groups.

  1. Protective Textiles. Used to improve visibility, protect workers from injury, and provide barriers between the worker and harsh operating environments. The design and performance of these fabrics is strictly regulated by bodies such as OSHA, ASTM, and others.
  2. Sport Textiles. Manufacturers rely on sturdy technical textiles to create a broad variety of equipment used in indoor and outdoor sports and other recreational activities. These fabrics must often be anti-bacterial, water repellant, and more.
  3. Transportation Textiles. Vehicles ranging from automobiles to railcars to boats and ships all rely on textiles in a variety of ways. These fabrics are often reinforced or coated to enhance physical properties and facilitate use under stress.
  4. Medical Textiles. Textiles used in medical devices, surgeries, and other medical applications must meet stringent medical cleanliness and cytotoxicity standards to ensure they are safe for contact with patients. These fabrics must often exhibit a range of antibacterial and chemical resistance properties.
  5. Industrial Textiles. Industrial textiles serve many purposes in industrial applications. These fabrics may require the incorporation of a significant range of physical characters into the design to meet the specific needs of an expansive range of potential use cases.

The textile industry is not only experiencing clothing application but also continuing a major outlook towards the non-clothing application of textiles known as Technical textiles. The distinctiveness and confrontation of technical textiles lie in the need to understand and apply the principles of textile science and technology to give solutions, in the main leading technological problems but also often to engineering problems as well.

Markets of Technical Textile:
The Asia-Pacific region is the largest market for technical textiles, due to the presence of large industrial and manufacturing sectors in countries such as China, India, and Japan. Europe and North America are also significant markets, while the Middle East and Africa are emerging markets with significant growth potential.

The market for technical textiles is large and growing, driven by increasing demand across a range of industries and applications.

Factory workers, emergency responders, construction laborers, civil servants, military personnel, and many others rely on personal protective equipment (PPE) to operate safely in the harsh environments presented by these jobs. Examples of safety equipment include:

  • PPE for industrial workers
  • Reflective safety vests/clothing
  • Protective linings in military uniforms and equipment
  • Prison uniforms
  • Reflective safety flags

Occupational safety equipment must often provide an array of practical functions, such as cut resistance, high visibility, comfort and support, and more. These textiles may be strictly regulated by:

  • OSHA
  • ANSI
  • ASTM
  • Mil-Spec
  • Mil-C
  • Berry Amendment
