How to Calculate CBM for Sea and Air Transport

What is CBM?
Cubic Meter, or CBM, is a standard unit of measurement used in logistics to quantify the volume of cargo. It represents the amount of space occupied by a shipment in cubic meters, aiding in determining shipping costs and space allocation.

How To Calculate CBM For Sea Shipment:
You have a shipment of boxes to be transported via ocean freight. Each box measures 1.2 meters in length, 0.8 meters in width, and 0.6 meters in height. You have a total of 10 boxes.

To calculate the total cubic meter (CBM) of your shipment, you would use the formula:

CBM=Length × Width × Height × Number of boxes

Example:
Given that each box measures 1.2m x 0.8m x 0.6m and you have 10 boxes:
CBM=1.2m×0.8m×0.6m×10boxes
CBM=0.864cubic meters per box×10boxes
CBM=8.64cubic meters

So, the total cubic meter (CBM) of your shipment is 8.64 cubic meters. This measurement is crucial for determining shipping costs and ensuring that your goods fit within the capacity of the container being used for transport.

How To Calculate CBM For Air Shipment:
Calculating CBM (Cubic Meter) for air freight involves measuring the volume of the shipment in cubic meters. Let’s consider an example:

Suppose you have a shipment of various items to be transported via air freight. You have three different types of packages:

Example:

Box A: Dimensions are 1.0 meters in length, 0.6 meters in width, and 0.4 meters in height. You have 5 of these boxes.
Crate B: Dimensions are 1.2 meters in length, 0.8 meters in width, and 0.6 meters in height. You have 2 of these crates.
Drum C: Dimensions are 0.5 meters in diameter and 0.7 meters in height. You have 3 of these drums.
To calculate the total CBM of your shipment, you need to calculate the volume of each type of package and then sum them up.

For Box A:
Volume of Box A=Length × Width × Height=1.0m×0.6m×0.4m=0.24cubic meters

For Crate B:
Volume of Crate B=Length × Width × Height=1.2m×0.8m×0.6m=0.576cubic meters

For Drum C (assuming a cylindrical shape):
Volume of Drum C =p×(2Diameter?)2×Height=p×(20.5m?)2×0.7m
Volume of Drum C =p×0.25m 2 ×0.7m=0.549cubic meters

Calculating CBM for Cylindrical Packages

CBM= πxr2xh
r = radius of the cylinder (in meters), h = height (or length) of the cylinder (in meters), π≈3.14159

Now, sum up the volumes of each type of package:

Total CBM=Volume of Box A+ Volume of Crate B+ Volume of Drum C
Total CBM=0.24cubic meters+0.576cubic meters+0.549cubic meters
Total CBM=1.365cubic meters
